Visited SPR MRKT last night to check out an exhibition by local photographer, Akai!
SPR MRKT has quite an interesting concept behind it – FOOD | RETAIL | ART. It’s great because the experience isn’t your usual walk in – order – make small talk while waiting for food – eat – pay – leave; you can actually choose to buy something that was used to make your food or browse through artworks of local artists.
Some of the cooking stuff you can purchase.
Pastry looks to die for.
Their menu consists of home made drinks, all day breakfast and daily specials.
After placing your order, go check out the art by Akai that’s currently on exhibition! Akai is a really talented photographer with a keen interest in architecture (he actually works for URA). His works are actually very diverse.
In this series, nondescript and landmark buildings alike were portrayed to look like the pyramids of Egypt, the most famous and enduring structures built in the short history of mankind’s existence on earth and the epitome of the notion of ‘monumentalism’ in architecture as the desire of a few powerful people.
These are shots of local buildings in Singapore – can you recognize any of them?
More of his works on the wall. Interesting perspectives of buildings and landscapes – love the tight composition.
Akai also dabbles in fashion photography, but you’ll see his play on perspectives and architecture in his fashion pieces as well. Some of these were done for Harper’s Bazaar!
Really interesting series of work commissioned by SPR MRKT. Micro shots of stuff you can find in the shop – be it pastry or napkins, shot to resemble landscapes! It’s quite different from his other works.
You can pick up some free postcards and browse through his portfolio too!
Back to the FOOD… SPR MRKT prides itself in using the freshest ingredients.
Bob and I ordered a burger, risotto and bread and butter pudding.
Brioche Beef Burger ($24)
The brioche bun was a really nice touch. No soggy bun problem here. Patty was firm, not too greasy and tasted really good with the egg and bacon. And I have no idea what was used to season the fries but they were rather addictive too. 😡
Mushroom and Asparagus Risotto (with Truffle oil), $20
Much subtler in taste as compared to the burger but I liked this too. It’s creamy and smooth… a simple dish that’s easy to eat and pleasing to the palate!
Bread and Butter Pudding, $6
A sweet end to the meal. Loved that everything tasted really home made and went well with the cosy atmosphere at SPR MRKT.
