Geisha

I must admit Geisha isn’t exactly the most good looking cafe there is out there. Tucked in a corner of Burlington Square, it looks more like a storage facility of coffee-related gadgets and – oh – hey, they serve coffee. That said, because there isn’t too much attention paid to the interior design of it all, the cafe does have a unique sort of charm. It probably seats about ten or so people. 2 small tables for 2, and a larger coffee table at the back that can probably seat 6 at best.

What draws us here is the availability of really exotic coffee, and a very passionate barista that hails from China. The owner himself sources for and roasts his own mix. He mentioned that his aim was to provide his customers with a 很舒服的感觉 – a very “comfortable” feeling when they drink his coffee. You can tell how serious he is with each cup he makes. The intensity’s all over his face, and eventually in the quality of the cuppa you get when he’s done with it.

Check out some of their specialities (which of course, come at a premium price):

The first time I had a cuppa Geisha was actually at Toby’s and I was really surprised at the taste. The one here’s just as good. It tastes nothing at all like coffee, and more like – believe it or not – orange tea, due to its acidity. There’s also a tinge of honey and it’s very light. Very complex, very smooth, very enjoyable. Worth the $15 I paid for. (Geisha’s one of the most expensive cuppas around, but less well known as luwak).

The Geisha. Apparently this cup and saucer set costs about $100 – embellished with real silver.

Expresso on the house.

As you can tell, they use different cups – apparently the design of the cup can enhance the taste of coffee! And of course, it lends to the charm of the place.

Would recommend this place for a quiet cup of coffee to wind down after some intensive shopping at Sim Lim or Bugis Street. If you’re really into coffee you can try some of his exotic offerings as well 🙂
