2NE1 Surprise Event

The good folks at SingTel organized a surprise 2NE1 concert at Read Bridge. There was a lot of speculation going around online, and thanks to the embargo nothing could be confirmed. But that didn’t stop thousands of fans from turning up at Clarke Quay, waiting for something to happen!

So a crowd built up at about 7pm in front of a makeshift stage set up at Read Bridge. 2 guys with a guitar started singing acoustic versions of 2NE1 songs, giving the crowd something to sing along to and further confirming their suspicions.

At about 7.30 a hologram thing of 2NE1 started playing on stage. At first I was a little disappointed, thinking it was going to be a holographic show. BUT HEY then they appeared whoohoo!!!

In case you are unaware, 2NE1 is my favorite K-Pop band. It’s a certain je ne sais quoi that they ooze that make them slightly more appealing I guess. Thanks to SingTel I was in the media pit, like, at the 3rd row. But fans were so crazy that I still couldn’t see much :<

Check out the crowd!

I swear there were so many people – when CL asked everyone to JUMP – the fans really jumped and I could feel Read Bridge vibrating, no joke. I could have died right there and then but I would have died happy.

The girls were awesome live! Can you see Dara. She’s my fave. *fangurlsz*

Once again, many thanks to SingTel for the invite, and this unique and amazing event.

Looking forward to more :)

The Fabulous Baker Boy

The Fabulous Baker Boy is situated in a nice laid back nook of Fort Canning. Almost everything else around it is half built for now so it’s a really quiet open space. A great place to chill. (I say that about almost every place I’ve written about right? I guess when I go places I really want to just chill.)

I pass by this area on my way to work so I was always curious to find out what was going on inside. So it was The Fabulous Baker Boy. Also, I was pretty confused when we first got there because everyone that served us was female.

Turned out baker boy was outside (pictured above, in the light blue shirt) eating KFC.

Oh yeah they offer ceramic classes too?

Nice decor! Plus cakes in full glory on their cake stands.

Nice fridge. Nice coffee machine.

Heh. This decor. A heiney and a bulmers hanging out with an old school transistor radio.

And that is what I did.

Cakes all go at about $7 a slice.

We ordered a slice of salted caramel cake and a slice of apple cider cake, and had coffee and iced tea to go with it.

I liked that you could really taste the butter in the butter cream and that the cake is MOIST! Which is how I like my cakes! Not dry / overbaked.

Couldn’t really taste the apple cider in the apple cider cake though.

A pity I was too full for main meals. They had stuff like chicken curry, garlic fries with truffle aioli, and COTTAGE PIEEEE amongst many other things.

Cupcakes at Swirls

Warning: cupcakes ahead!

Visited Swirls at Rodyk Street (very near Kith and Toby’s!) for a tasting session, thanks to Danish :) I was accompanied by le food blogger extraordinaire, Alexis.

ohyeah.

Look at this cutie patootie who was so excited about cupcakes! SOOOOO CUTE!!!

Okay! Moving on, Swirls is a little shop that’s tucked at the corner of a building. The story goes like this – Danish and his wife had an epic American road trip, and they tried many epic cupcakes, and they decided that they should bring these epic cupcakes to Singapore.

They serve a wide variety of cupcakes in different sizes – tiny, regular and COLOSSAL!

Never seen a colossal cupcake? Scroll down -

BAM!

Comparison between a tiny and a colossal. It’s HUGE!!

Swirls also sells art created by students from Pathlight. It’s great that they give back to society.

And… we were treated to quite a spread of regular cupcakes, tiny cupcakes and cake pops! Accompanied by lavender tea.

Very pretty!

Regulars cost about $3.95 – $4.10 and Tinys from $2.50 – $2.80.

Our top faves:

3rd: Tiramisu – you can taste actual coffee in the moist centre!

20120804-140509.jpg

2nd: Vanilla Chocolate – vanilla cupcake with chocolate butter cream frosting. This might sound diabetic but it really wasn’t too sweet, and I appreciated its simplicity.

20120804-140618.jpg

1st: Red Velvet – Crimson chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting! This one was really good – the red velvet went very well with the frosting.

20120804-140618.jpg

Others:

Carrot cake – nice texture

20120804-140451.jpg

Strawberry burst – made with fresh strawberries

20120804-140519.jpg

They used pretty heart sprinkles <3

Nuts about you – chocolate cupcake with peanut butter frosting! Not a fan of the M&M toppings though…

20120804-140528.jpg

Very Vanilla – Vanilla cupcake with vanilla butter cream frosting

20120804-140604.jpg

Nutella – Chocolate cupcake with Nutella center & hazlenut butter cream frosting

20120804-140542.jpg

Cake pops: were a little too dense and too sweet for us… the texture is like chocolate

20120804-140437.jpg

Our cupcake graveyard!! Couldn’t eat it all!

Colossal cupcake in the making

They have an alfresco dining area too, for those who prefer to chill by the river.

What I appreciate about Swirls is that they pay attention to what goes into the cupcakes – no artificial flavours used. Would visit again for that red velvet! Try our top 3 choices if you’re in the area. While you’re at it, order the lavender tea too – it does a good job in washing down all that sugar!!

Would have to agree with Alexis though - can’t beat Plain Vanilla

Yoga at Yoga Movement

20120705-221423.jpg

So since I’ve tried GYROTONIC® and Pilates I decided to give Yoga a try (again) at Yoga Movement today. (Not sponsored.) It’s my 2nd Yoga class!

I’m still trying to get used to Yoga. It’s a little too abstract for me… I’m used to counting, knowing where to put what limb, what music to follow…

It takes a little more effort to think about myself being lighter, or coming back to my breath. What am I supposed to feel, pain? A stretch? Like I’m suffocating? Heat??

I wobble in a Downward Dog. I don’t really know the names of the other poses. I have trouble going from that Downward Dog to putting my feet between my hands. Or even putting my nose on my knees with my legs outstretched and my feet flexed.

Like okay, how like this?

That aside, I tried my best. I felt good at the end of the class. It was like the slowest, most sweaty thing I’ve ever done.

I dare say I’d do it again.

20120705-221430.jpg

What I appreciated about Yoga Movement was that the registration process was really easy – just as they’ve illustrated in the board above, 3 steps. They’re not pushy with sales. It’s fuss free.

Their place is really cosy too :) take a look:

Clean, white-washed toilets:

BTW that’s Jo, who brought me here. Beginner class, she said. You might fall asleep, she said.

Note that there’s no air conditioning. No lockers. A couple of showers. 1 toilet(bowl)?

Here’s their yoga schedule.

Namaste.
